Leaking tap or pipe? What to do until the plumber arrives

Quick steps to stop water damage from a leak, and what to tell your plumber so the fix is fast.

Leaking tap or pipe? What to do until the plumber arrives

A small drip wastes litres of water a day, and a burst pipe can damage floors and walls fast. Here is what to do while you wait for a plumber.

Turn off the water

Find the valve under the sink or behind the toilet and turn it clockwise. For a bigger leak, close the main valve near the water tank or meter.

Protect the area

Put a bucket under the leak, move electrical items away and soak up standing water with old towels.

Take photos

Photograph where the water comes from: the tap base, a joint, under the sink or a wall patch. Photos help the plumber understand the job before arriving.

Do not over-tighten

Forcing a tap or joint can crack old fittings and make the leak worse. A temporary wrap of plumber's tape is fine; leave the rest to the professional.
